Ratatatata - Why Your Tongues May Not Be Working (Galatians 5:25)

Ratatata… 

The sound rises with urgency, charged with emotion and intensity. It carries the appearance of power, as though every syllable is pushing back against darkness. I have seen it often, people speaking in tongues with the expectation that the devil must flee simply because words are being released.

But there is a problem we rarely confront.

Spiritual authority is not activated by sound alone. It is sustained by alignment. A life that contradicts the Spirit cannot produce power, no matter how intense the expression may seem. What appears forceful on the outside can be empty at its core.

Scripture draws a clear line. If we live in the Spirit, we must also walk in the Spirit. That is not a suggestion, it is a standard. The life must agree with the language.

James 1:22 warns against self-deception, hearing without doing. Titus 1:16 exposes the contradiction of professing God while denying Him through actions. 2 Timothy 3:5 goes even further, describing a form of godliness that carries no real power.

This is where many get it wrong.

There is an overreliance on outward expression, while the inward life is neglected. Tongues become a substitute for obedience, rather than a reflection of it. But God is not moved by performance. John 4:24 makes it clear that He seeks those who worship in spirit and in truth, not in sound alone.

Authority over darkness does not come from what is spoken in moments of intensity. It comes from a life that is consistently submitted. Luke 6:46 asks the question many avoid, why call Him Lord and not do what He says? And 1 Peter 1:16 calls for holiness, not occasional spiritual display.

So the issue is not speaking in tongues. The issue is living a life that gives those tongues weight.

When alignment is missing, expression becomes noise. When obedience is absent, declaration loses authority. But when a life is truly shaped by the Spirit, what flows from it carries undeniable power.

The focus must change. Not on how often or how intensely one speaks, but on how consistently one walks. Because in the end, spiritual authority is not proven by what is said in a moment, but by what is lived every day.

So ask yourself honestly, is it your voice that carries power, or your life?
